Cayetana Fern\u00e1ndez surprised\u00a0all the enthusiasts with a promising\u00a0performance at the Comunidad de\u00a0Madrid Ladies Open. Being just 16 years\u00a0old, the player from Madrid showed a\u00a0mature play and a consistency that\u00a0many pros of the circuit would like\u00a0to have. She achieved a place among\u00a0the first classified for the final on the\u00a0second day and she was able to be at\u00a0the stellar game of the last round. Ana\u00a0Pel\u00e1ez<\/a> and her drove the audience\u00a0crazy. They conquered all the followers\u00a0of the tournament while enjoying a\u00a0unique experience. The proud and\u00a0smiley player from Madrid didn\u2019t\u00a0disappoint them at any moment. Her\u00a0wonderful game left her in the third\u00a0position tied with great players such\u00a0as Pia Babnik and Manon De Roey.\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

The young amateur felt thrilled and\u00a0thankful: \u201cThe truth is that I am very happy\u00a0that the federation have given me this\u00a0opportunity to play, because not everyone \u00a0can play professional tournaments. And I\u00a0have enjoyed all the time for being able to\u00a0compare myself with the pros that are at\u00a0the top now\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

Cayetana who is in the CETEMA program,\u00a0combines her high school studies with\u00a0the golf. She already has a scholarship\u00a0for next year in the EEUU: \u201cNext August\u00a0I\u2019m going to the Texas MIUC. I\u2019ll be there\u00a0with my sister Blanca the first year. Most\u00a0of all I want to finish my degree because\u00a0you never know. Afterwards I\u2019ll try to do Le\u00a0Qualifier and I\u2019ll try to play in the LPGA. If\u00a0it doesn\u2019t work there, my challenge would\u00a0clearly be to try to get the card for the LET.\u00a0If not, the LETAS. What I certainly know is\u00a0that I would like to do this for a living. I have\u00a0been playing since I was a small child and it\u00a0is a sport that I love\u201d, she explains.\"\"<\/p>\n

What\u2019s bred in the bones comes out inthe flesh, because it was her father, who\u00a0loves golf, the one who managed to convehis passion to his three daughters: \u201cHe took\u00a0us with him and we started to train and play.\u00a0It has been forever in our life. Just one week\u00a0without playing and I feel weird, I miss the\u00a0course even just to go for a walk. It is a very\u00a0pleasant sport\u201d, \"\"Cayetana tell us. She is\u00a0delighted to know that she won\u2019t be alone\u00a0so far from home: \u201cObviously, being with\u00a0my sister is a gift, I am very lucky, because\u00a0the first year is said to be very tough. I am\u00a0delighted to go to the same university as my\u00a0sister and to enjoy the first year together.\u00a0We have a very good relationship. Our aim\u00a0is to become pro together, we want to live\u00a0it together, it could be said that it is like the\u00a0Korda sisters\u201d, she laughs.<\/p>\n

Even though Cayetana was unknown to the\u00a0audience outside Madrid and for people\u00a0outside the golf world, the young player\u00a0knows the fruits of success. She won the\u00a0Copa Su Majestad La Reina Tournament\u00a0in 2021 and in 2022 and she was finalist\u00a0in 2020, she has also achieved many titles\u00a0in team tournaments. \"\"Even so, she wasn\u2019t\u00a0sure that she wanted to be a pro until very\u00a0recently: \u201cI have changed my mind may\u00a0times, because when you are a child, you\u00a0see it clearly. Afterwards I wasn\u2019t so sure\u00a0for a while. A few years ago, I started to\u00a0like it very much, I began to watch more\u00a0women\u2019s golf and the truth is that I like it\u00a0more and more every day. It was then when\u00a0I started to have the dream of becoming\u00a0like Nelly Korda; I am a fan of hers. I was\u00a0lucky to go to the Solheim and watch them\u00a0play. That made me keen to be a pro, I said\u00a0\u201cI want this in my life\u201d and I would like to\u00a0be like the professionals that I saw playing\u00a0there\u201d.\"\"<\/p>\n

Despite being so young, Cayetana is\u00a0incredibly mature and has an exquisite\u00a0education. She admires Carlota Ciganda\u00a0deeply and she is conscious of all the\u00a0sacrifices that golf demands if you want\u00a0to be successful: \u201cI think that what it is\u00a0most complicated is your mind. I don\u2019t like\u00a0to work on it. We work with Oscar del Rio\u00a0once a week, he helps us quite a lot. I have\u00a0improved a lot. This is the most important\u00a0part in golf because if you don\u2019t have a\u00a0good mind, you won\u2019t get anything even\u00a0being very good\u201d, she explains very self-confident.\u00a0The poise she has showed all the time\u00a0has impressed us all: \u201cI wasn\u2019t so tranquil\u00a0inside. What works the best for me is to\u00a0breathe\u00a0and maybe to take my mind off it by\u00a0drinking, eating or speaking with someone.\u00a0It is a way to evade myself from the game.\u00a0Once I am in front of the ball I concentrate,\u00a0most of all doing my breathing\u201d, she says.\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

With a great swing and precision on the\u00a0greens, Cayetana has now a new objective:\u00a0\u201cShort game is harder for me, but I am quite\u00a0good at the long one, so I am training the\u00a0putt and the approach, they are the most\u00a0important to improve\u201d she explains.\u00a0In the face of so much self-confidence, we can\u00a0just agree with her, wish her all the luck and\u00a0join her in her words of gratitude to her family,\u00a0friends and the CETEMA<\/a>.
