Amelia is a teacher and a part-time writer. She has won several writing contests and, at the beginning of the year, she self-published a compilation of her stories with BoD.
When did you start writing?
I write since a was a little girl, mostly short stories and poems. But honestly, it is never late to start. I believe writing is something you always carry inside you, only some people bring it out before others.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I find it in the people around me, in things that happen to me or to people I know. I like to start from a simple idea and play with it, turn it into fiction. In Dos pájaros de un tiro, there are characters based on real people I know in every single one of my stories.
How would you describe your creative process?
I try to gather all of my ideas in booklets in order to go through them before writing. I then develop those into longer stories and make any changes I deem necessary. Right now, I´m in the middle of planning a novel: defining the timeline, characters, etc. Even though I mostly go with the flow, I´d rather have the argument and characters well defined.
What pushed you to finally publish? Publishing means to share everything I have to say with people who can understand my stories the way I do. I like to write the short stories I´d like to read myself. It makes me very proud to see myself being recognized as a writer.
How would you define success as a writer?
Before anything else, I strive to keep evolving as a writer, learning new writing techniques and testing them out in my texts. More than selling many books, my goal is to enjoy writing and to move others with it.
Why did you choose to self-publish?
I had previously published a book with a conventional publisher. In the end, most of the book promotion was left to me and the friend I wrote it with, so I decided to try self-publishing. The best about publishing with BoD is that I receive more generous royalties than with traditional publishing and that I always know how many books were sold.
Do you have any tips for other writers considering self-publishing?
To always look for professional help during the process. I personally always send my texts to be professionally proofread to ensure it is well organized. It is important to seek opinions from other people apart from your family and friends, as they tend not to provide critical feedback. On the other hand, it is key to have a professionally designed book cover that will attract readers.
