Known as the Garden of Europe because of its great production of fruit, vegetables and flowers, Murcia is also rich in natural parks, beaches and golf courses. Jumillas, Bullas y Yecla are the three celebrated wines produced in the region. Having more than 300 days of sunshine per year and an average temperature of 19 degrees, plus its 252 km of coast, La Costa Cálida is the ideal holidays destination for any period of the year. There are 22 golf courses of high level, with very different designs, making each course a unique experience.

The city of Murcia

The capital of the region is of mysterious origins, the evidence suggests it was founded in the year 825 by order of Abderramán ll and it was built on top of an older roman settlement. During the Middle Ages, Murcia became the capital of La Cora de Tudmir, and in the later years it became the capital of different  Taifa kingdoms which increased in importance during the centuries Xl, Xll and Xlll. Finally between the years 1243-1266 it was englobed in the Kingdom of Castilla.

The Cathedral is the perfect starting point for any tour of the city. Artistically it is the most important building and its tower is the symbol of Murcia. It was constructed during five centuries (s.XlV-XVlll) and three different styles can be appreciated (Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque). It is an incredible testimony of the history of Murcia. The construction started in the year 1385 on the terrain that was occupied by the main Islamic mosque of the city. The bell tower reaches the height of 90 metres (95 counting the vane), making it the second highest in Spain, just behind the Giralda of Seville. It is the highest point of the city and it is composed of five different parts of decreasing width. Each one presents different artistic styles, which really surprises visitors.

It is also recommended to visit the famous Casino, of elegant interiors; the great 

sculptural heritage of Francisco Salzillo and also other Baroque style buildings such as the Palacio Almudí. The city centre is perfect for walking and enjoying the architecture and the intense social life of the city, with its cafes and restaurants which are always full.

Cartagena

The city of Cartagena is famous because of the abundance of Roman ruins which can be found. It is recommended to visit the Roman theatre, the museum of the theatre, the Roman Forum, the Augusteum or la casa de la Fortuna. They are all found in perfect conditions.

It is a port city, opened to the Mediterranean sea through a large bay. It is a natural harbour which borders are the island of Escombreras (East side) and the cerro de La Torrosa (West side). The entrance is guarded by a series of castles and coastal constructions built around the centuries  XVlll and XlX.

Cala Cortina is the beach of the city. To gain access to it, the harbour must be encircled through the Santa Lucía neighbourhood and through a tunnel. The path is used by tourists since it is possible to appreciate the bay surrounded by cliffs and mountain. The overlook can be used for parking and it offers views of the bay and the Mediterranean sea. The turquoise and clear waters are irresistible and it is difficult to resist not going for a swim.

Cabo de Palos

Cabo de Palos is a very beautiful fishing village, known because of the famous lighthouse, beautiful bays and spectacular marine environment, located in one of the most important natural reserves of the Mediterranean. The lighthouse, of 81 meters in height, can be found on top of a rocky cliff, from where it can control the whole area. Its construction started in 1863 and it was finished in 1865. In the year 2002 it was declared of cultural interest “Bien de Interés Cultural”.

La Manga del Mar Menor

It is a sandy formation, known as barrier island, it has a length of 22 km and a width between 90 and 900 meters. Its presence results in the formation, through communication paths with the Mediterranean (known as “golas”), to the coastal lagoon of the Mar Menor. The area is of international importance and it has an area of 170 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 8 metres. The temperature and calmness of the water make it ideal for all types of nautical sports.

The islands of El Mar Menor: El Sujeto, El Barón, El Ciervo, Redondela and Perdiguera are  protected environments.

Gastronomy

The variety of cultures which have existed along the ages has also been transmitted in the kitchen. Ancient civilisations like the Romans and the Al-Ándalus have left their prints in the gastronomy, which is mainly based on products like rice, fruit but also fish and seafood. The food perfectly combines with the three types of wine produced in the region.

The “Caldero del Mar Menor” is one of the star plates of the gastronomy. The culinary tradition of this plate is traceable back to the XlX century. The name and the way of cooking the rice originates from the local fishermen.

The “michirones” is a stew based on dried beans obtained from the earth, served in a mud casserole with bacon, ham bones, “chorizo”, “pimentón” and a spicy touch. The meat-pie of Murcia is another important dish, the plate has its roots in the Middle ages. The “zarangollo” is a very simple but delicious scramble of zucchini, onion and eggs. The “Pajarotes” originate from an Arabic recipe, it consists of covering lemon leaves with the dough from which “buñuelos are made, (flour, milk, eggs and sugar), which are then fried. This original dessert is the finishing touch of the gastronomy of Murcia.

Hacienda Del Alamo

Considered one of the best courses in the Region of Murcia, the 18 holes of Hacienda Del Alamo golf is integrated perfectly into its natural terrain. Large Greens and strategically placed hazards make this a very interesting course to play. The resort also features a 6-hole executive course, a stunning Sheraton 4* hotel and over 100 touristic apartments.

Saurines

Saurines Golf is in many ways like the great desert courses of Las Vegas and Arizona which were also designed by Jack Nicklaus. These can be characterised with wide open undulating fairways which are broken in places by sand dunes, raised and undulating greens add to the test of golf here but very few bunkers on the course help towards a good scorecard. The focal point of many holes is the large lake at the centre of the golf course. The course is now ranked at Nº 39 in Spain in the “Top 100 Golf Courses” website.

Mar menor

Los primeros nueve hoyos fueron diseñados por Dave Thomas y los últimos nueve hoyos fueron diseñados por Jack Niklaus (Nicklaus Design), contando con calles anchas y una gran diversidad de diseños. La Manga Club Resort

The resort is home to three 18-hole golf courses and, in recognition of its 50 years of existence, and thanks to its high quality facilities and wide range of services, the resorts golf club was named ´Real Golf La Manga Club´ in 2017 by The Royal Household of Spain. This honour would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Golf Federation of the Region of Murcia and the Regional Government of the Region of Murcia.

The golf courses are located along the 6km2 of the resort, and each course is suitable for the different levels of its players.
