Jacqueline is a woman who never ceases to amaze us. Her intelligence, class and radiant smile perfectly complement her long legs and beautiful blue eyes. An open and fun-loving person, this young Scottish golfer is extremely proud to be, since November, captain of one of the most emblematic golf clubs on the Costa del Sol. Every week come Tuesday and Friday, she can’t wait to get out on the course and take part in the ladies’ tournaments. It provides a welcome contrast to her more regular outings with male golfers, something which arises from the fact that she has four children, a husband and a father who are all avid golfers. Her way with people, her teaching experience and her love of golf make her the perfect captain.

It all happened so fast. She started playing golf just seven years ago and managed to lower her handicap to 18 and become the captain of the club. This, to a large extent, is her father’s fault. He has been member of Aloha since 1982. When she came to Spain, he told her, “you can’t live here, have four children, and not play golf”. And so it was, she became member of her first course, Aloha Golf, even before she was the owner of the set of clubs. She then started to take classes and fall in love with the sport which is now the focus of her life. “When you hit your first fantastic shot, it gives you the confidence that you can do it again. Every day you hit enough good shots to make you want to come back the next day”, she tells us.

It was on the practice course that the members took notice of her, inviting her to join the group and take part in ladies’ competitions. From that point on, she started to take a more prominent role, starting with small organisational tasks before joining the interclub team. She even became treasurer until she was asked to become captain in November. Flattered by the request and extremely proud to take on the responsibility, Jacqueline faced the difficult challenge of “doing new things, organising an interesting competition schedule, and above all, creating memorable golfing experiences for all mem-bers”. She recalls that her friends were more surprised by the fact that she actually played golf, than by her becoming captain. Born in Glasgow, she has a de-termined and disciplined nature. Her career as a schoolteacher comes in very useful in her role as captain. “I know how to mix and team members up to create a pleasant atmosphere. I want us all to get to know each other and be united, because I can’t stand cliques”, she tells us. Among her many contributions, there was the Ryder Cup celebration in the club, involving all the members and finishing off with a huge party and the famous ‘tapas’. The refurbishing of the Club House has been her main task this year and she is immensely proud to show us how impressive the new facilities are. Right now, she can’t wait for the Ladies Open in November. She hopes to “see more women playing golf around the world” and she is surprised and sad-dened by the fact that “many girls start young but when they are 15 they abandon it. This is not the case so much with boys”. A perfect example is the fact that her four boys are now her golfing companions. She has great fun out on the course with them. “They are very bold, paying little attention to potential hazards. It’s almost as if trees and water don’t exist for them”, she tells us while laughing. “It’s great because I learn so much from them on the course. Besides, it’s a great op-portunity for us to chat out in the open. It’s magnificent”. She is a clear example of how important a role women can play in golf as she has been able to pass on this passion for our beloved sport to her children.
