Lena’s first years as Los Naranjos Golf Club captain haven’t been as brilliant as she would have liked due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, she managed to organize the captain’s day, the interclubs and even the Summer League, applying all the restrictions required. Lena was born in Sweden, but she has been living in Finland with her husband for so long that she considers herself to be fifty-fifty. She is very proud of her recent election as Solheim ambassador, because she knows that many women all over the world will be well inform of the event through her. Lena is active, discerning, a sport lover and very organized, she is a real example as a captain.

Golf arrived to Lena’s life at a moment of many changes. It was 2010, she was the one who suggested to her husband to start playing. Their fondness for this sport was so big that they started traveling to the Costa del Sol every year until they decided to buy an apartment in Marbella to live here for six months a year. After playing several courses, they decided to become members of Los Naranjos due to its friendly atmosphere and its course: “We played in other clubs before, but we felt that the atmosphere here was very inviting. It is a Scandinavian club, but it is international also. For us it was very important the Friday Golf, because mingling is a marvellous way to meet new people. We chose Los Naranjos also due to everything that surrounds it and because we wanted a good golf course. I love it for both sides: the mountainous and the plain. There are defiant parts on both rounds”, Lena explains. But it was the human side of the club that captivated them in the end: “When you come back you feel yourself full of energy and very happy. They welcome you, they are the same friendly faces always, same staff, you feel yourself at home”, she describes. 

Very proud of her title as captain, Lena leads by example: she takes lessons, it is usual to see her at the driving range and she plays competitions, in fact, her objective this year is to participate for the first time in the emblematic Los Naranjos Trophy tournament, a Medal Play match over four days. She performs as captain even during her training: “Los Naranjos is a very open course; so, we usually have women pros from other countries who come to practise here because we have a wonderful driving range. We have the opportunity to watch them while they are practising and I try to invite them to play with us some holes or even in some competitions”.

It is a very well organized and dynamic club, for Lena its best quality is that it is very focused on golf. “We try to improve our golf knowledge, introduce the new golf rules, we have also mental training. That’s why Los Naranjos is such a good course, because it is focused on the improvement of its member’s golf”, remarks Lena. She ensures that as a captain she has the support of the whole team and that whenever she has any requirement or any suggestion the staff hear her immediately.

Having been elected as the Solheim 2023 ambassador is another great challenge for Lena: “The fact that the Solheim comes to Spain is a great opportunity to boost Spanish ladies’ golf. Through myself the message will arrive to all the other members, who are Swedish, Swiss, German… They will talk about it at their own clubs and everyone in the end will want to come to Spain to see the Solheim, or if they can’t at least they will come afterwards to play golf here. Finca Cortesin doesn’t have enough capacity to host all those coming, those people will have to stay somewhere else”, Lena explains and goes on: “I think that Andalucia is one of the best places for golf in the world. It has good weather, personality, culture and history. For woman players it is important to have good courses with a great organization behind them, and I think this is the moment to play golf in Andalucia.”
