Luna Sobrón was handed her first golf club by her father when she was just two years old. She´d already played her first tournament when she was six and she hasn’t stopped since then. She used to come back home crying whenever a competition was finished because she loved to compete. Her first success came when she was already playing as an amateur, among her achievements it is worth noting her 13^th position at the British Open. After receiving her Bachelor Degree in Business & Administration, she became an amateur player winning the European as well as the American players card. Despite the break due to Covid 19, 2020 has been an exceptional year for her, she was second place at the Saudi Open,  20^th at the US Open and she won the Santander Golf Tour. Luna or “Primu”, as Nuria Iturrioz calls her, is very self-demanding, disciplined and stubborn. She loves golf, nature and animals, but she was born to compete. Under her sweet and quiet look, there is a strong, combative woman, a woman of a breed to succeed. She is, without doubt, among the greatest of our national golf players.

2020 has been a good year for you, what plans do you have for 2021? 

2020 season has been good and I’m thankful for having been able to compete despite the situation. During 2021 I have planned to play in America as much as I can. My objective is the Symetra Tour, because there I can get the full American players card. But I’ll try to play in Europe also because there is a very good calendar ahead.

What do you think about the LET program?

Women’s Tour is evolving a lot and I appreciate it, but the road is still long. Having such a grand Tournament as the one in Saudi Arabia, almost as grand as the men’s, is very good as well. I’m thankful also for el Race de Costa del Sol, finishing your season with a tournament in the Costa del Sol is a luxury.

What about the Solheim in la Costa del Sol?

To have LET tournaments in Spain was already important, and now that the Solheim is to come it is a step forward to advance and promote women’s golf. I honestly hope to be in the Solheim, and I will work hard to achieve it.

How many Spanish players can you foresee in the Solheim?

Well, the more Spanish players the better. I have a very good relationship with Carlota, a true reference, and with Azahara. To be in a team with them would be incredible. There are many good women players in Spain, Nuria Iturrioz is another of them. A team with Nuri would be great, it would be perfect.

Is the support to women’s golf changing?

I have noticed quite a difference from two years ago until now. I think there are more TV broadcasts, it has been given more visibility. Women’s golf is talked about more often, and now with the Solheim everyone in Spain will know about ladies’ golf.

What do you think it is the level in Spain?

I think it is quite good. Now we have a good team, we are growing every day, and I love it, because when we played in Arabia it looked like a Spanish tournament, between players and caddies we were around 20 in total.

What do you dream of?

Of being one of the best players in the world. My dream is to win a British title and to improve day by day to achieve my objectives. Right now, it is to improve my LPGA category, but on a long term, it is to be at the top, competing with the best.

Why the British?

I love playing against the wind. The truth is that I play well there. I like to imagine how to play a putt of 40 meters. The courses and the swings are so variable and different that you never know.

What are your strengths?

Perseverance, I’m very stubborn and I don’t stop until I get what I want. It is also the fact that I enjoy playing. I think that’s the key point, to enjoy while you are training and playing. I like the adrenaline you get when competing. During a tournament I hit much harder than during training. For example, today I can do 126 meters with an 8 iron, but during the competition I can hit 133 with the same club. The adrenaline gives me that bit extra, I like playing whilst tense.

How is it to have your partner as your caddie? Isn’t it difficult?

It is sometimes on the course, because reliance can be difficult, so some conflicts can arise now and then. We agree that what happens in golf stays in golf.

Which is your worst enemy?

Negativity, my self-demand level, sometimes I can’t see a good swing even though I’m in the green. In fact, sometimes Alvaro tells me, – don’t say it is a bad swing, you are on green 4 meters to the hole and with a birdie option, when you were 160 meters before.

Any superstition?

Yes, for example, I always mark with a coin, it is a 100 pesetas coin with the head up and the neck pointing to the ball. I do it always, and I never play with yellow tees. I have some others that make me feel confident or tranquil, such as I never play with ball number four.

There are many who do not play with the Titleist 3.

I do, since I did a –10 with a Titleist 3 I put that superstition out of my head.
